Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC), in French Cours de langue pour les immigrants au Canada (CLIC), classes are offered to adult permanent residents who already have an intermediate or advanced level of French. To book a language evaluation and determine whether you qualify for this service, contact Coopérative d’intégration francophone de l’Î.-P.-É. (CIF). If you are eligible, the classes are free, as the cost is covered through Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada. CLIC classes are also offered online.

Collège de l’Île

Collège de l’Île is a French-language community college that offers French language training through evening or day part-time classes (held in Charlottetown, Summerside, Montague and Deblois), distance learning, one-on-one tutoring, and full-time immersion classes.  Interested in learning conversational French?  The français oral program is comprised of four beginner levels and four intermediate levels as well as advanced and perfectionist levels. The beginner to advanced courses is taught using a communicative and experiential theme-based approach. The concentration is on oral conversation competency, however, there is an accompanying handbook or handouts for each level.

The course is broken down into sub-themes within the main theme. Université Sainte-Anne

French as a second language: Part-time day and evening courses in Charlottetown.  This 10-week program is offered four times throughout the year and consists of 2 hours and 15 minutes of weekly classes. Classes are offered during weekdays in the evening from 6:00pm-8:15 p.m. Students are granted a certificate upon satisfactory completion of every 10-week program. Beginner, intermediate and advanced courses are offered. Students will be tested prior to their entry into the program. University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI)

UPEI offers courses for several French language levels. A placement test must be taken prior to registration for these courses to determine the candidate’s language level.

Avance Learning Centre

Community-School Centres

Each Acadian community on PEI has a centre scolaire-communautaire (community-school centre) which offers many activities in French to the general public. Joining in these activities is a good way to develop a sense of the sound of the French language and vocabulary while meeting people in the Acadian-Francophone communities.   https://peicommunityschools.com/

Prince Edward Island Public Library Service- Welcome to Rocket Languages for Libraries

PEI Libraries is now offering Rocket Languages a product that allows you to learn a language on your own terms and in your own time. The comprehensive multi-media package will help you speak and improve your language skills with every lesson by taking part in the modern, everyday conversations that make up the Interactive Audio Course. In addition, you will learn to speak the language naturally with language and culture lessons and you can also build on your vocabulary and improve your audio recognition of common words and phrases (and have fun at the same time) with our popular Master Games range.

Each month the Bibliothèque publique d’Abram-Village, Bibliothèque publique Dr.-J.-Edmond-Arsenault (Charlottetown), Bibliothèque publique J.-Henri-Blanchard (Summerside) offers various French language learning materials to loan, as well as language learning software on the library computers. Duolingo is a free website and mobile application offering numerous language courses in a virtual environment with fun game-like and social network elements. Courses are offered in various combinations. For example, there is a French course for English speakers, a French course for Chinese speakers, etc.
